Andreas Holzinger works on Human-Centered AI (HCAI), motivated by efforts to improve human health. Andreas pioneered in interactive machine learning with the human-in-the-loop. For his achievements, he was elected as a member of Academia Europea in 2019. Since 2021 he is a member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. Andreas is paving the way towards multimodal causability, promoting robust, interpretable and trustworthy medical AI, advocating for a synergistic approach to put the human-in-control of AI, and align AI with human values, privacy, security, and safety. [2p-CV].

Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning is remarkably successful and even outperforms humans in certain tasks. Humans on the other hand are experts at multi-modal thinking and are able to embed new inputs into a conceptual knowledge space shaped by experience. The vision of Andreas Holzinger is to build systems capable of explaining themselves, engaging in interactive counterfactual “what if” questions. Using conceptual knowledge as a guiding model of reality will help to train more robust, explainable, less biased machine learning models, ideally able to learn from fewer data.

Andreas obtained a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Graz University in 1998 and his Habilitation (second Ph.D.) in Computer Science from Graz University of Technology in 2003. Andreas was Visiting Professor for Machine Learning & Knowledge Extraction in Verona, RWTH Aachen, University College London and Middlesex University London. Since 2016 Andreas is Visiting Professor for Machine Learning in Health Informatics at the Faculty of Informatics at Vienna University of Technology. Since 2019, Andreas is Visiting Professor for explainable AI, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, University of Alberta, Canada. Andreas is full member of the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS).

In 2011, Andreas Holzinger founded the international research network HCI-KDD having organized yearly workshops fostering a synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches of two domains which offer ideal conditions to design, develop, test and evaluate efficient Human-Centered AI: Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery/Data Mining (KDD). In 2017 he renamed these HCI-KDD workshops in xAI workshops and integrated them as part of yearly IFIP Cross-Domain Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction (CD-MAKE) conference.

Currently, Andreas serves as? Co-Editor of the Special Issue on Advances in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) in Elsevier Information Fusion (INFFUS) which is now on rank 2 of 136 journals in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Co-Editor of the Special Issue on Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Elsevier Artificial Intelligence (ARTINT),? which is on rank 14/136 in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Andreas is Associate Editor of Springer/Nature Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS), Section Editor for Machine Learning of Springer/Nature BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making (MIDM), and founding Editor-in-Chief of the cross-disciplinary journal Machine Learning & Knowledge Extraction (MAKE). He is organizer of the?IFIP Cross-Domain Conference “Machine Learning & Knowledge Extraction (CD-MAKE)” and Austrian representative in the IFIP TC 12 Artificial Intelligence and member of IFIP WG 12.9 Computational Intelligence, the ACM, IEEE, GI, the Austrian Computer Science and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).

For his contributions to the international research community and his efforts to bring two fields closer together in a cross-disciplinary way, in 2019 Andreas Holzinger was awarded as a full member to the section Informatics of Academia Europea, the European Academy of Science.

Andreas is lead of the Holzinger Group (Human-Centered AI Lab, HCAI), Institute for Medical Informatics/Statistics at the Medical University Graz, and Associate Professor (Univ.-Doz., UG 93) of Applied Computer Science at the Faculty of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at Graz University of Technology. He serves as consultant for the Canadian, US, UK, Swiss, French, Italian and Dutch governments, for the German Excellence Initiative, and as national expert in the European Commission. His is in the advisory board of the Artificial Intelligence Strategy AI made in Germany? of the German Federal Government and in the advisory board of the Artificial Intelligence Mission Austria 2030.

Since 2003 Andreas has participated in leading positions in 30+ R&D multi-national projects, budget 6+ MEUR, for the publication track record please refer to Scholar or DBLP
